A Free Christmas Game - Objective of White Elephant Gift Exchange The objective of the White Elephant Gift Exchange is to create a festive atmosphere by giving anonymous gifts. The gift must be inexpensive and pretty useless - the funnier the gift the better! The term white elephant refers to a gift whose maintenance cost exceeds its usefulness! It is permissible to 'steal' a gift during the White Elephant Gift Exchange process!
Preparation of the White Elephant Gift Exchange Before a guest arrives at the Christmas party they should prepare for the White Elephant Gift Exchange by wrapping a useless, funny and inexpensive gift! No gift label should be attached.
White Elephant Gift Exchange Rules The White Elephant Gift Exchange rules are as follows:
Agree the price range of gifts with all the participants - $2-5 or £1-3! (We're talking cheap!)
Gifts can be purchased from Thrift or Charity shops
All gifts must be wrapped
The gifts must all be placed in a sack
Only people who have brought a gift with them may play the White Elephant Gift Exchange game (No Gift - No Game!)
All participants draw a number from a hat indicating their turn to pick a gift
Number 1 picks the first gift from the sack and unwraps it
Participant Number 2 can: a) "steal" an already opened gift or b) choose aa wrapped gift from the sack
If a participant chooses to steal, the person whose gift is stolen repeats his turn and either 1) steals another person's gift (he cannot immediately steal back the gift that was just stolen from him) or 2) unwraps a new gift.
As any gifts can be stolen the owners are not finally decided until the game is over
A gift can only be stolen 3 times!
