The most important Christmas decoration in Italy is the 'presepe' or 'crib'. The crib is made up of Mary, Joseph and the new baby Jesus. History of the Crib
Saint Francis of Assisi is believed to be responsible for the popularity of the crib. Around 1220 in the town of Greccio near Assisi, Francis set up a real crib scene complete with animals and said mass using the crib as his altar.

Saint Francis was a Catholic deacon who also founded the Franciscans. Apart from being the patron saint of Italy he is also the patron saint of animals and the environment.
