The Meaning of Christingle
The meaning of Christingle relates to two Christmas Customs:

  • A small symbolic Christmas gift for children

  • A Christmas church service particularly for children which includes giving the Christingle gift

The Christingle gift is made of an orange with small candies or sweets placed on four skewers of cocktail sticks  or tooth picks are skewered into the orange. A candle is inserted into the top of the orange and a red ribbon wrapped round it.

The Significance of the Christingle Gift
Each element of the Christingle gift has a meaning of religious significance:

  • The orange symbolizes the world

  • The red ribbon represents the blood of Jesus

  • The four sticks are put into the top half of the orange at opposite points which represent the four seasons of the year

  • The candies or sweets symbolize the sweet things of life and its bounty

  • The lighted white candle represents purity and Jesus Christ, the light of the world. 

The History and Origin of Christingle
The History, Origin and Christmas Custom of Christingle dates back to 1749 in Germany. A pastor named Johannes de Watteville wanted to introduce something special to his Christmas service, especially for the children. The idea of the Christingle gift was his idea. It was practical as the items required for the gift were inexpensive but it was also symbolic and would help him to convey the meaning of Christmas to the children. Pastor Johannes de Watteville gave each child the gift with a prayer that said "Lord Jesus, kindle a flame in these dear children's hearts". This was the first ever Christingle service.
